Social & Ethical Uses of Technology
Copyright
- Noun- The exclusive right to make copies, license, and otherwise exploit a literary, musical, or artistic work, whether printed, audio, video, etc. This as stated by www.dictionary.com
- Copyright issues have shown up more in recent years due to ease of access to material through the internet. As more access to other people's work becomes available, it also has opened the opportunity for people to take others' work without their permission.
digital equity
- According to Davis, T. (2007), Digital equity is defined as equal access and opportunity to digital tools, resources, and services to increase digital knowledge, awareness, and skills.
- When considering the role of technology in development of the 21st century learner, digital equity is more than a comparable delivery of goods and services, but fair distribution based on students’ needs.
- While achieving digital equity is a challenge, one should look to the causes of the digital divide and to the various strategies suggested by experts in the field to provide guidance to those dedicated to promoting digital equity
Digital (Healthy) Citizenship
It is extremely important to teach and model good internet safety practices for our students. Digital citizenship is all about using technology in an appropriate and responsible manner. Three parts of digital citizenship:
- Cybersecurity – Protecting our computers! Learn what types of emails we should and should not open. Also, learn what types of programs and protections are needed to ensure that users do not lose important data.
- Cybersafety – Understanding the link between the online world and the “real” world. It is our focus to teach our young people online behaviors that will protect their well-being.
- Cyberethics – Treating others online as you would like to be treated. Again, teaching our students how what is typed online can be even more damaging than what is said in person. Cyberbullying and other inappropriate online behaviors leave a record or “digital footprint” for all to see. It’s permanent!
Intellectual property
- The idea of intellectual property became a very important issue in the early 2000s, after the internet had infiltrated nearly every home in the United States. It is still a major issue that demands our attention today.
- As defined in the Merriam-Webster dictionary, intellectual property is “property (as an idea, invention, or process) that derives from the work of the mind or intellect; also : an application, right, or registration relating to this”.
