This is an official website and as Principal of Saline Middle School, we use this organization as a resource for our students each year. This group will come out and speak to our school in the beginning of each year on the use of digital citizenship and the dangers of misuse of technology. This resource is outstanding for anyone who works with students, teachers, parents and the community. It offers many different links to browse through, resources for support and many articles that relate to the topic of digital citizenship. It also serves as a teaching tool for school districts when educating our students and staff on what is happening in the world as it relates to technology.

This website offers information for parents, educators, home users and small businesses. Basically, it helps the society to use the internet safely and securely no matter where or when you are connected. Their initiative “Stop-Think-Connect” has been adopted by many school districts. Their point that the internet is a powerful and useful tool, but that it is not to be taken lightly. They compare it to buckling your seatbelt while driving, riding a bike without a helmet, do not connect to the internet without taking basic precautions. It offers headings such as, teaching online safety, being safe while online, keeping your business safe and getting involved instead of assuming someone else is monitoring for you. I particularly liked the “teaching online” page, it is divided into sub groups from K-2, grades 3-5, middle & high school to higher education. Plus, in additional it provides support for administrators and the community.

21 Things 4 Students
REMC Association of Michigan. (2012, June 01). 21 things 4 students. Retrieved from http://www.21things4students.net/about/
21 things 4 students Website was put together by the State of Michigan REMC group. Regional Educational Media Center (REMC) received a grant to develop this website. This site is maintained by a team of three Intermediate School Districts in Michigan (Shiawassee, Ingham and Macomb). This site provides many resources that specifically support teachers, students and districts with technology proficiency as they continue to succeed in the 21st century. At first, I looked at this website with digital citizenship in mind solely. However, after navigating through this site I realized it has much more to offer us as educators in the classroom. You will be able to use strategies with your students in teaching digital citizenship, digital footprints, teacher resources with opportunities to collaborate with colleagues from around the state. Kids watch videos so that they know what to do. PSA’s are used to help model appropriate use. Just in time teaching activities for our staff and students is available and helpful.

Common Sense Media

Common Sense Media is a site that reviews thousands of movies, TV shows, music, video games, apps, websites and books. It provides reviews regarding age appropriateness as well as educational value! This is an area that we all could need support in as educators, parents and families. Too many times we assume that our children are being responsible for their media viewing. Of course we feel that what is available to our children has been monitored for us, but this is just not true. Our young people today have so much access to items that are inappropriate and we as the adults trust that this is being monitored. In 2012, CSM released its “Digital Passport” which is an online interactive curriculum that is free to classroom teachers, who can monitor their students progress. We cannot assume that education is being done, so CSM has provided us with an opportunity to learn, educate and protect our young people.
